Rosa Parks School
Rosa Parks Elementary School
1501 O'Farrell St, San Francisco, CA
Building a garden at Rosa Parks School began in 2008 when the school became eligible for a $240,000 grant. Over the next two years, the school held weekly meetings to include students, staff, parents and the surrounding community to formulate a plan. They visited other gardens in the Bay Area, read about other gardens in the US, and then brought in Miller Company to consult, design and build a large garden. In the summer of 2010, the building of the lower garden began and in the spring of 2011, through grants, extra bond money and a lot of hard work from families, staff and community, we began the removal of concrete in the upper garden. With the help of CommunityGrows, a local non profit that assists SFUSD with garden education, the garden has flourished and serves as a great tool to teach the kids about land stewardship, growing food, cooking, and nutrition.
