Miller Company has worked with the Berkeley Unified School District since 2003, to renovate multiple campuses and create natural outdoor learning environments.  We have drawn master plans to serve as guides for long-term improvements, and have developed specific project plans for individual schools based on community priorities.   

Our work began with a landscape master plan and project plan for Oxford Elementary School. Within the scope of a very tight budget we were able to focus our design on improvements to both upper and lower play yards. The campus has come alive with a new organic garden, new native plantings, a small amphitheater/outdoor classroom, new site furnishings, and additions of new play structures, equipment, and game courts.  

At Washington Elementary and LeConte Elementary Schools we created thriving learning gardens, new outdoor classrooms, improved playground equipment, and landscape upgrades focused on the introduction of native plantings. Use of recycled and sustainable materials has been a constant in our design plans for each school.  

Miller Company has also designed streetside improvements for many schools, including new entry gateways, signage, furnishing, and plantings. These improvements have gone a long way in setting a tone of care and pride for each school campus.
