Lafayette School 2020

Lafayette Elementary School - San Francisco, CA

In 2020, the school yard at Lafayette Elementary School was transformed as the final step in the SFUSD modernization process.  The completed project includes a learning garden/outdoor classroom, lunch space, creek bed as well as extensive new shade trees and plantings on both the main yard and school perimeter. As one of the first recipients of the San Francisco Public Utility Commission’s Green Infrastructure Grant Program, the landscape scope integrates stormwater management strategies that significantly reduce the demand on City sewer infrastructure by removing asphalt and allowing water to infiltrate the native dune sand below. The new school yard offers a wider range of recreational opportunities for students and a newly painted blacktop with enhanced game striping and a bold color scheme.

The learning garden has been expanded significantly from the original outdoor classroom we had designed in 2007. More seating, planting space, and tables have been added in addition to permeable pavers.
